Jimmie Johnson tried hard to be philosophical after a dominating performance in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race was ruined by a dry gas tank.

The three-time reigning Cup champion led 145 of the 200 laps in the LifeLock 400 and was out front when he ran out of gas two laps from the end. Johnson wound up coasting the rest of the way to a 22nd-place finish.

Mark Martin has won the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway, conserving just enough fuel to get to the finish.

It was the third win of the year for Martin.

Jimmie Johnson dominated most of Sunday’s LifeLock 400 and took the lead from Greg Biffle six laps from the end. But the three-time reigning Cup champion ran out of gas two laps from the finish.

Biffle inherited the lead, but he too ran out of gas. That cleared the way for the 50-year-old Martin to drive to the front.

Reigning NASCAR truck champion Johnny Benson is in serious but stable condition after a fiery crash during a SuperModified race.

The driver was starting his second lap when he collided with another car on Saturday night at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Mich. His car slammed into the wall and erupted into flames.

Benson, of from Grand Rapids, Mich., reportedly had multiple injuries, including burns and broken ribs.
