Tony Stewart was fined $10,000 Monday for what the U.S. Auto Club deemed unsportsmanlike conduct during a midget race last week at O’Reilly Raceway Park.

Tony Stewart Racing also was placed on probation for the remainder of the USAC season.

Stewart reportedly knocked a radio headset off the head of one USAC official and shoved another following a ruling Thursday involving Stewart’s car, driven by Tracy Hines.

Indianapolis racing fans expected more than a parade of caution periods Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Given the tire situation, they ended up with a series of short sprints won by Jimmie Johnson and left the largest attended race on the NASCAR circuit mostly dissatisfied .

“My wife wanted a souvenir. I should have bought her a caution flag,” said Max Guillozet of Rossburg, Ohio.

The subject of tires is a sensitive subject in Indianapolis, site of the Formula One fiasco in 2005.

NASCAR has ordered competition cautions during its race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway over worries about the Goodyear tires used by the circuit.

Drivers and crew chiefs complained after practice on Saturday that the tires were wearing down too quickly on the 2.5-mile track and are concerned they might not have enough tires to complete Sunday’s 400-mile race.

There will be a mandatory caution on lap 10, allowing drivers to pit and change tires without losing track position.
