Jeremy Mayfield has missed the deadline to enter his car into Saturday night’s race at Daytona International Speedway.

He had an afternoon deadline Thursday to bring the No. 41 Toyota to the track, and it passed with no sign of Mayfield or his race team.

Mayfield’s indefinite suspension for a failed drug test was lifted by a federal judge on Wednesday, allowing him to race this weekend. He still can race if another team gives him a seat in a car.

A judge has lifted Jeremy Mayfield’s suspension, saying the NASCAR driver should be allowed to race.

U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen says “the court finds the harm to Mr. Mayfield significantly outweighs any harm to NASCAR.”

NASCAR had indefinitely suspended Mayfield on May 9 after he tested positive for methamphetamines on May 1.

In his ruling Wednesday, Mullen says NASCAR can test Mayfield extensively, including hair samples, to determine “if he’s been a methhead or not.

NASCAR confirmed Wednesday that suspended driver Jeremy Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamines.

The confirmation came outside federal court after Mayfield’s attorney mentioned the illegal substance several times during a 45-minute argument against the driver’s indefinite suspension. Court recessed after Bill Diehl’s argument and is set to reconvene Wednesday afternoon.

Juan Pablo Montoya has wins all over the world, but he’s been realistic in NASCAR. That approach is working out, Rea White says.

Jeremy Mayfield is in court trying to get his indefinite suspension from NASCAR lifted by a federal judge.

Mayfield is the first driver suspended under NASCAR’s toughened drug policy. He failed a random test taken May 1 and was suspended eight days later.

He’s suing to be reinstated and hopes a judge rules Wednesday so he can make it down to Daytona International Speedway in time for this weekend’s race. Mayfield is arguing that NASCAR’s drug testing policy does not meet federal guidelines.

Sprint Cup points leader Tony Stewart runs short-track special events in what little spare time he has. On Tuesday night he walked away from Madison International Speedway with a top-five effort.

Former Cup Series champion Matt Kenseth finished second at his hometown track to Chris Wimmer, and Stewart wound up fifth in the All-Star Challenge, a 100-lap super late model race on a half-mile oval.

Wimmer, a short-track veteran from Wausau, Wis.
